Michael Trestl, Austrian Airlines' Chief Commercial Officer, said about the route:

“We are excited to announce Boston as a new and highly attractive destination. This destination enhances our long-haul offering and strengthens the Vienna hub. Boston's world-renowned universities, including Harvard and MIT, business connections, and the city's unparalleled charm make it a fascinating and enticing travel destination. Additionally, it will be even easier for visitors and tourists from the New England to come to Vienna in the future."

Austrian Airlines' Route Network

Austrian Airlines currently serves over 125 destinations worldwide, with 19 routes to cities outside Europe. Aside from Boston, the airline offers direct flights to Chicago-O'Hare, Los Angeles, Newark, New York-JFK, and Washington-Dulles. Austrian Airlines is the only way for Americans to fly directly to Vienna since no U.S. carriers offer such flights. Austrian's other intercontinental routes serve destinations in Africa, Asia, Canada, Mexico, and the Middle East.

Trestl said the following about the carrier's long-haul network:

"The expansion of our long-haul network solidifies our position as the clear number 1 in Vienna and contributes to better connecting Austria as a hub for business and tourism. We look forward to welcoming even more international guests on board our flights in the future!"

Travel Between the U.S. and Austria

Austria is a popular European travel destination for Americans. The country's main destinations include historic attractions in Vienna and Salzburg and winter sports in Innsbruck. An advantage of Austria is its relative affordability and lack of crowds compared to destinations like France, Italy, and Spain. Meanwhile, the National Travel and Tourism Office found that the U.S. is popular with Austrian travelers, with 55,000 visiting between January and June 2022.

Aside from tourism, the U.S. and Austria's strong economic relationship creates a strong demand for business travel. The U.S. was Austria's largest export destination and the second-largest import destination outside the European Union in 2022. In the same year, trade between Austria and the U.S. accounted for 12.9 billion euros ($14 billion) and 7.3 billion euros ($7.9 billion) worth of products, respectively.

United Airlines MileagePlus members can earn miles on Austrian Airlines flights since the two airlines have a codeshare partnership through their membership in Star Alliance. Americans can also visit Austria by flying on another airline and connecting through another European airport.
