Silver Airways Files for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy, Will Resume Normal Operation

BY WINSTON SHEK Published on December 31, 2024 0 COMMENTS

On Monday evening, Silver Airways announced that it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in a Florida bankruptcy court. In a statement to customers, the Florida-based airline assured customers that it would continue normal operations through bankruptcy.

In a press release, the airline shared that the decision would "allow [it] to secure additional capital and undertake a financial restructuring that will strengthen [its] position as a competitive airline, ultimately benefiting [...] our valued customers."

In July 2022, Silver Airways was scrutinized for overdue rent, gate fees, and landing fees of $1.4 million at Fort Lauderdale's airport, one of the airline's hubs. The regional carrier narrowly avoided a lease termination in April 2023 by agreeing to a payment plan with city and government officials.

For Current Passengers

Silver Airways assured passengers that operations will not be affected for passengers who have already purchased tickets. Specifically, the airline noted that all current tickets would be fulfilled by the airline, including those booked through United and JetBlue loyalty programs.

Additionally, tickets booked through a third party would also be valid. As of Monday, December 30, ticket sales for upcoming Silver Airways flights are still valid on the company's booking page, as well as through third-party sales channels.

About Silver Airways

Silver Airways is a regional airline based in Florida. The airline was formed in 2011 with assets from Gulfstream International Airlines, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy at the time. The company had been operated as Continental Connection — a vendor to Continental Airlines — at the time, before it rebranded to Silver Airways after the acquisition. After the Continental-United merger, Silver Airways operated as United Express until June 2013, when it decided to operate as an independent entity.

The airline operates regionally in Florida and the Caribbean, with routes primarily focused in Florida, the Bahamas, and Puerto Rico. These routes are served by the airline's fleet of ATR-42 and DHC-6-300 Twin-Otter aircraft.

Silver Airways has a seaplane subsidiary based in the US Virgin Islands: Seaborne Airlines. The airline acts as a critical connection within the U.S. Virgin Islands between St. Thomas and St. Croix. In 2019, Seaborne Airlines delivered hurricane relief supplies for Hurricane Doriane in the Bahamas.`
